About HCSO: Divisions: Marine Patrol Division
Blank spacer      The Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office provides marine safety enforcement on the many bodies of water within our jurisdiction. The division is part-time, which operates from mid April until September of each year. Deputies are part-time marine certified who normally work weekends and various weeknights enforcing the waterway laws of the State of Michigan. The division is funded by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and, on occasion, they will provide for the purchase of much needed boats and related equipment for the proper enforcement. In 2008, we put into service a newly purchased boat funded by the Department of Natural Resources.

The Marine Deputies are deputized and fully empowered to make arrests for drunk driving, operating under the influence of drugs and reckless driving, all in an attempt to keep our waterways a safe place for families to have fun, absent dangerous vessel operators. Deputies are also charged with enforcing the navigation laws, including proper flotation devices, proper vessel operation, lighting, emergency equipment and state certified drivers.

The Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office also provides free boater safety training classes and certifies students upon successfully completing the class and test. Each year our office trains 200-300 students from all over the state as well as students from nearby portions of Ohio and Indiana. This is a service provided to the public at no cost for tuition or certification. The training locations are usually in the central location of the county, within the City of Hillsdale, but classes are occasionally held in both the northern and southern regions of the county to accommodate the many residential developments surrounding area lakes and those attending from out of the area. Classes are always posted in advance in the training section and are also broadcast on WCSR.

Boating accidents remain a concern to this division and as such, the deputies are constantly striving to reduce boating accidents by strictly enforcing the navigation laws of Michigan. Such enforcement is geared toward compliance with the end result of safe waterways.

The Marine Patrol Division is under the command of Captain Richard Winder.
